Safety

Compared with many African countries, violent crime is rare in Ethiopia; against travelers it’s extremely rare. Petty theft is common in Addis Ababa, but less common elsewhere.

Since the controversial 2005 elections, there have been isolated occasions of violent clashes and minor bombings in Addis Ababa. There is a need to check the government’s travel advisories for up-to-date security reports. Due to continued security issues around Gambella in western Ethiopia, the area should be avoided by tourists. The same can be said for Ethiopia’s border areas with Somalia.

Ethiopia has oodles of beggars, and travelers often resent being ‘targeted’– follow locals’ lead and give coins to disabled, ill, elderly and blind persons. If not, say igzabier yisteh/yistesh (m/f; God bless you) with a slight bow of the head. Give nothing to children, whether it is money, sweets, pens, empty water bottles or food.

Self-appointed guides can be annoying. Be polite but firm.
